There is an enduring need for more effective nuclear waste management solutions and an ever-increasing focus on refining the safety, efficiency and longevity of interim storage facilities. New timeframes are being introduced with stock to be held in storage for up to 100 years and beyond, made possible by the establishment of highly secure centralised interim storage facilities. Meanwhile, the IAEA is introducing new guidelines looking at the possibility of global regulatory uniformity and compliance, something which is complemented by a proposed directive from the European Commission.
